When to worry about diarrhoea with giardiasis

Giardiasis is an intestinal infection that can cause loose, watery or greasy stools, bloating, cramps, wind, nausea and tiredness. Some people notice stools that are difficult to flush or have a strong smell. Ongoing diarrhoea can reduce hydration and may make it harder for the body to absorb nutrients, so symptoms that continue deserve review.

Sip water or oral rehydration solution regularly, particularly after each loose stool, and eat small simple meals if tolerated. Wash hands with soap and water after the toilet and before handling food. Avoid swimming while you have diarrhoea. A clinician may prescribe treatment after assessing your symptoms; do not share medicines with household members.

Seek urgent help for faintness, confusion, very little urine, inability to drink, severe abdominal pain, blood or black stool, or a high fever. Contact a clinician when diarrhoea continues, returns after improving, causes weight loss, or occurs in a child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with reduced immunity.

Ask whether a stool test or prescription treatment is needed, how to protect others at home, and when it is safe to return to work or school. Mention recent travel, untreated water, household illness, stool changes, vomiting and your urine pattern.
