When to Worry About Coughing Up Blood With Pneumonia

Pneumonia inflames the small airways and air sacs in the lungs. Irritated airway tissue can make mucus appear pink, rust-coloured, or streaked with red. Fever, chills, cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, and marked tiredness may occur as well. Blood can have other causes, so its presence should be discussed with a clinician rather than attributed to pneumonia without assessment.

Rest, drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration, and take prescribed treatment according to the instructions. Record when blood appears and whether it is increasing, recurring, or mixed with clots. Avoid smoking and ask before taking medicines that affect bleeding or suppress coughing. If you were given a follow-up plan, use it; worsening symptoms deserve a call even when treatment has already started.

Seek emergency help for heavy or ongoing bleeding, severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or intense chest pain. Arrange prompt medical review for any new blood, repeated episodes, worsening fever, increasing breathing difficulty, inability to keep fluids down, or unusual drowsiness. Older adults and people with long-term heart, lung, or immune conditions may need earlier assessment when pneumonia symptoms change.
