When to worry about cough with a common cold

Cough is a very common presentation of Common Cold. Mucus draining from the nose and irritation in the throat or airways can cause a dry or mucus-producing cough. It may linger after other cold symptoms begin to settle because the airway lining remains sensitive. A cough that becomes more severe, returns after improvement, or comes with breathlessness, chest pain, or marked fever may signal another infection or complication.

Rest, drink fluids, and avoid tobacco smoke or other airway irritants. Warm drinks may soothe an irritated throat; honey can be considered for people older than one year. Follow label directions for any over-the-counter medicine and check with a pharmacist if pregnant, treating a child, or taking other medicines. Record whether the cough is improving, stable, or worsening rather than judging it by sound alone.

Call emergency services for severe trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or significant chest pressure. Seek prompt medical advice for coughing blood, dehydration, persistent high fever, worsening breathlessness, or chest pain when breathing. Arrange a clinician review if the cough is not gradually improving, repeatedly interrupts sleep, or is limiting normal activity.

Ask whether the cough fits a simple cold or needs examination, which medicines are safe for you, and which symptoms should trigger urgent care. Mention asthma or COPD, smoking exposure, fever, breathlessness, and any improvement followed by deterioration.
