When to worry about cough with allergic rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis can cause nasal congestion and mucus draining towards the throat, leading to throat clearing or cough. It often occurs with sneezing, an itchy nose, or watery eyes and may flare after exposure to a trigger. Wheeze, fever, chest pain, or a cough unrelated to nasal symptoms suggests that another cause may need checking.

Notice links with dust, pollen, pets, or other exposures and reduce contact where practical. Saline nasal rinsing may help clear irritants; use safe water and clean equipment. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on an antihistamine or nasal spray, including technique and cautions for other medicines.

Arrange a review if cough continues despite controlling nasal symptoms, disrupts sleep, or repeatedly returns without an obvious trigger. Seek urgent help for shortness of breath, wheezing that is worsening, blue lips, coughing blood, severe chest pain, faintness, or sudden deterioration.

Ask whether the cough is from nasal drainage, asthma, infection, or another cause; which allergy treatment suits you; and what breathing symptoms require urgent assessment.
