When to worry about cloudy urine with a kidney infection

A kidney infection can cause urine to look cloudy because inflammation and infection change what is carried in the urine. Burning, urgency, frequent urination, fever, chills, nausea, and pain in the side or back may occur alongside the change in appearance.

Cloudy urine is not specific to kidney infection. Dehydration, crystals, mucus, and other urinary conditions can alter its appearance. The combination of symptoms and a clinical urine assessment is more useful than colour alone.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly if kidney infection is suspected. Drink fluids if you can do so safely, rest, and write down your temperature, urinary symptoms, pain location, and any medicines already taken. A clinician may request urine testing and decide whether prescription treatment is needed.

Do not use leftover antibiotics or share someone else’s medicine. If you are vomiting, pregnant, have kidney disease, or have a weakened immune system, explain this when seeking care because it can change the urgency and treatment plan.

Go to urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, severe side or back pain, or a rapidly worsening condition. Fever or chills with urinary symptoms should be assessed promptly rather than watched at home.
