When to worry about chills with pneumonia

Most people with Pneumonia who have chills also feel feverish and unwell. Cough, phlegm, shortness of breath, chest pain that worsens with breathing, rapid breathing, and reduced energy can accompany the infection. Chills do not identify pneumonia on their own, but they matter more when respiratory symptoms are developing or worsening.

A clinician may need to listen to your chest and assess oxygen levels, breathing effort, and general condition. The cause can be viral, bacterial, or another problem, so treatment depends on the assessment rather than the chills alone.

Arrange medical advice for chills with a new cough, breathlessness, chest pain, or feverish illness. Rest, drink small amounts often, avoid smoking, and follow the treatment plan you were given. If antibiotics were prescribed, take them as directed and do not share them. Keep track of whether breathing, alertness, fluid intake, and energy are improving or declining.

Call emergency services for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, collapse, inability to stay awake, or severe chest pain. Seek same-day care if breathlessness is increasing, you cannot keep fluids down, you are coughing blood, or you become much weaker. Seek early advice if you are pregnant, older, immunocompromised, or have heart or lung disease.

Ask whether you need an examination, chest imaging, oxygen measurement, or specific treatment. Explain when the chills began, your cough and breathing pattern, chest pain, measured temperature, phlegm, medical conditions, and medicines.
