When to worry about chest pain with shingles

Chest Pain is a common presentation of Shingles. The virus can irritate a single nerve, producing burning, tingling, or touch-sensitive pain in a band on one side of the chest. A rash may appear after pain begins. Chest pain can also come from the heart or lungs, so a new pattern should be assessed rather than assumed to be nerve pain.

Contact a clinician promptly if a new painful rash is appearing, because early treatment may be considered. Keep the rash clean and covered, avoid scratching, and avoid close skin contact with newborns or people with weakened immunity. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you.

Call emergency services for severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, fainting, cold sweating, blue lips, or confusion. Seek urgent assessment for a rash near the eye, vision changes, facial weakness, severe headache, or widespread blisters. Same-day advice is sensible when pain is rapidly worsening or you cannot drink or sleep.

Ask whether the pain follows a nerve, whether antiviral treatment is appropriate, and how to protect vulnerable household members. Mention when the pain and rash started, which side is affected, and any breathing, vision, or neurological symptoms.
