When to Worry About Chest Pain With Pulmonary Embolism

Short answer
Chest pain with suspected pulmonary embolism needs urgent assessment, especially when it is sudden or comes with breathlessness, faintness, coughing blood, or a fast heartbeat.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Urgent symptom
- Sudden chest pain with breathlessness needs immediate assessment.
- Do not drive
- Arrange emergency help if you are faint, confused, or severely breathless.
- Tell clinicians
- Mention clot risks, recent surgery or travel, medicines, and when symptoms began.
What chest pain can mean
Chest Pain is a common presentation of Pulmonary Embolism. A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that travels into a blood vessel in the lungs and can interfere with blood flow. The pain may feel sharp and worsen when you breathe in deeply or cough. Some people also notice unexplained breathlessness, a racing heartbeat, light-headedness, anxiety, or a cough. These symptoms can overlap with other urgent problems, so the sensation alone cannot identify the cause.
Pain that is severe, sudden, persistent, or linked with breathing difficulty deserves prompt attention. A new symptom after prolonged immobility, recent surgery, pregnancy or the post-partum period, or a previous clot is also a reason to seek medical advice urgently.
What to do if it happens
Stop exertion and sit or lie in a safe position while arranging urgent medical help. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, breathless, confused, or seriously unwell. Tell the emergency team when the pain began, whether breathing changes it, and whether you have had swelling or pain in one leg. Share your medicines and any recent operation, long journey, illness, pregnancy, or earlier blood clot.
Do not take someone else’s anticoagulant or use leftover medicine to treat the pain. A clinician may need to assess your oxygen level, heart rate, examination findings, and decide whether urgent tests are needed.
When to seek emergency care
Call emergency services immediately for chest pain with marked breathlessness, collapse or fainting, blue or grey lips, confusion, coughing blood, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat. Seek urgent assessment for new chest pain that is severe, sudden, worsening, or associated with one-sided leg swelling. Do not wait for symptoms to settle if you are concerned about a pulmonary embolism.
If symptoms are mild but new, contact a healthcare professional promptly for advice. Emergency clinicians can distinguish a possible lung clot from conditions such as a heart problem, infection, or muscle pain; waiting at home cannot make that distinction safely.
Questions to ask your doctor
Ask what features of your pain or breathing make a pulmonary embolism more concerning, which tests may be appropriate, and what warning signs should prompt a return to emergency care. If a clot is diagnosed, ask how treatment should be taken, which activities are suitable while recovering, and how to report bleeding or worsening symptoms.

Questions people ask
Can pulmonary embolism cause chest pain when breathing in?
Yes. A sharp pain that worsens with a deep breath or cough can occur when a pulmonary embolism irritates tissue around the lung. It still needs clinical assessment because other conditions can cause similar pain.
Should I wait to see whether chest pain improves?
Do not wait when chest pain is sudden, severe, worsening, or accompanied by breathlessness, faintness, coughing blood, or a racing heartbeat. Arrange urgent medical help instead.
What information should I give emergency clinicians?
Explain when the pain started, what it feels like, whether breathing changes it, and any leg swelling. Mention recent surgery, immobility, long travel, pregnancy, previous clots, and your medicines.
