When should you worry about blurred vision if you have migraine?

Migraine can affect vision before or during head pain. Vision may seem hazy, shimmering, or interrupted, and the change may settle as the episode passes. The same symptom can also arise from an eye problem or a neurological emergency, so the pattern matters. A new visual symptom, a different pattern from your usual migraine, or symptoms affecting only one eye should not be self-diagnosed.

Stop driving and move to a safe, dimly lit place. Note when the visual change began, whether it affects one or both eyes, and whether weakness, numbness, speech trouble, confusion, or severe headache appears. Follow your clinician’s migraine plan if you have one. Do not take someone else’s medicine, and arrange an eye or medical review if episodes are new, becoming more frequent, or lasting longer than expected.

Seek emergency help for vision loss or marked blurring that starts suddenly, does not improve, or occurs with facial drooping, arm weakness, difficulty speaking, confusion, fainting, severe imbalance, or a sudden extreme headache. Seek prompt medical advice for a first episode, an eye that is painful or red, new floaters or flashes, or visual symptoms after an injury.

Ask whether your visual pattern fits migraine, whether both eyes are involved, which warning signs should change your action plan, and whether you need an eye examination or neurological assessment.
