When to worry about bleeding in early pregnancy with ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the main cavity of the uterus, often in a fallopian tube. Early bleeding may be light or intermittent, and pain can begin on one side of the lower abdomen or pelvis. Symptoms may change over time, so a previous mild episode does not make later pain or weakness safe to ignore. Bleeding alone cannot confirm the location of a pregnancy.

Contact urgent pregnancy care as soon as you notice bleeding if an ectopic pregnancy is known or suspected. Explain the amount and colour of bleeding, where any pain is located, and whether you feel dizzy. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or weak. Assessment may involve examination, blood tests, and ultrasound to establish where the pregnancy is and how you are coping.

Call emergency services for severe or worsening abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, confusion, extreme weakness, or heavy bleeding. Sudden collapse or pain with marked dizziness is an emergency. Go immediately if these symptoms occur, even if the bleeding seems small or you have not yet had a scan.

Ask what tests will locate the pregnancy, when results will be reviewed, and which symptoms mean you should return immediately. Ask how to access care outside clinic hours and whether you need someone to stay with you.
