When to worry about bedwetting with a urinary tract infection

Bladder irritation can create sudden urgency, frequent small wees, discomfort, and accidents during the day or night. A child who was dry may wet the bed while unwell. Fever, pain in the side or back, chills, or vomiting can suggest involvement beyond the bladder and should lead to faster assessment. Bedwetting alone does not identify the cause.

Arrange a urine assessment when wetting occurs with urinary symptoms, and follow the prescribed treatment plan if an infection is diagnosed. Encourage regular toilet trips and normal drinking unless a clinician advises otherwise. Do not use someone else’s antibiotics or rely on leftover medicine. Note temperature, pain location, urine changes, and when symptoms began.

Seek urgent advice for fever with shivering, back or side pain, repeated vomiting, blood in urine, severe abdominal pain, unusual sleepiness, confusion, or very little urine. Babies, pregnant people, and anyone with kidney disease or reduced immunity should receive prompt clinical advice when infection is suspected.

Ask whether a urine sample is needed, how quickly symptoms should improve, which pain relief is suitable, and what to do if wetting continues. Tell the clinician about fever, constipation, previous urinary infections, allergies, pregnancy, and current medicines.
