When to worry about bedwetting with type 1 diabetes

When blood glucose is high, the kidneys may pass extra glucose and water into urine. This can increase thirst and urination, including overnight, and a previously dry child may start wetting the bed. Type 1 diabetes can develop quickly, so a cluster of symptoms matters more than wetting alone. Similar symptoms can have other causes and need proper assessment.

Arrange same-day medical advice for new bedwetting with marked thirst, frequent urination, tiredness, or weight loss. If diabetes is already diagnosed, follow the person’s agreed glucose and ketone plan, keep prescribed treatment available, and never change insulin without clinical guidance. Offer normal fluids while arranging advice unless a clinician has given different instructions.

Go to emergency care for vomiting, deep or fast breathing, worsening abdominal pain, fruity-smelling breath, severe drowsiness, confusion, dehydration, or inability to keep fluids down. These symptoms can indicate a dangerous rise in ketones. A child or adult who is difficult to wake or breathing abnormally needs immediate help.

Ask whether glucose and ketone testing is needed, which symptoms should trigger emergency care, and how to manage fluids and prescribed medicine. Explain whether the wetting is new, whether daytime urination has changed, and whether there has been illness or reduced appetite.
