When to worry about ankle pain with an ankle sprain

Short answer
Ankle Pain is a very common presentation of Ankle Sprain, but severe or worsening pain needs assessment, especially with deformity, numbness, colour change, or inability to bear weight.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the pain may mean
A sprain stretches or tears one or more ankle ligaments, so soreness, bruising, and pain with movement can occur. Pain that is gradually settling fits the expected recovery pattern more closely than pain that suddenly increases after improvement. Persistent tenderness over a bone, marked instability, or pain that prevents normal walking may indicate an injury needing examination, such as a fracture or a more significant ligament injury. Ankle pain has several possible causes, so the symptom alone cannot identify the injury.
What you can do now
Reduce activities that provoke pain and protect the ankle from another twist. Elevate it when resting, use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods, and follow any clinician-provided support or weight-bearing instructions. Do not force stretches or return to sport while walking remains painful or the ankle feels unstable. Arrange a clinical review if pain is not clearly improving, if you need help choosing safe exercises, or if the injury is limiting work or daily movement.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for an ankle that looks deformed, an open wound near the injury, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, a cold or blue foot, new numbness, or inability to move the toes. Prompt assessment is also appropriate after a major fall or twist, or when you cannot take a few supported steps. A clinician may examine the bones and ligaments and decide whether imaging or immobilisation is needed.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could this pain involve a fracture or a higher ankle ligament? When may I bear weight fully? Which brace and exercises are suitable, and what change should prompt another review?
