When to worry about abdominal pain with inguinal hernia

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue presses through a weak area in the groin. It may cause pulling, pressure, or aching that increases with standing, coughing, lifting, or straining and eases when lying down. A painful lump can become trapped, which may affect the bowel and needs rapid assessment.

Stop strenuous lifting and arrange a medical examination for a new or changing lump. Note whether the bulge disappears when lying down, whether pain follows activity, and whether bowel movements or urination change. Do not forcefully push a painful, hard, or stuck bulge back inside. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you.

Go to an emergency service for worsening pain with a tender or discoloured groin lump, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, fever, faintness, or inability to pass stool or gas. These signs can occur when the hernia is obstructing or trapping tissue. Prompt review is sensible if the bulge is growing or limiting movement.

Ask whether the hernia needs surgical repair, which activities are safe while waiting, how to manage constipation or coughing, and which changes should send you straight to emergency care. Mention previous abdominal operations, pregnancy, severe coughing, and medicines that affect bowel function.
