When to worry about abdominal pain with giardiasis

Giardiasis is an intestinal infection that can disturb digestion and cause cramping, bloating, excess gas, loose stools, and nausea. Mild discomfort may come and go with bowel movements. Pain that becomes sharply focused, steadily stronger, or different from your usual pattern may point to another problem as well as the infection.

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, especially after loose stools or vomiting. Choose simple foods as tolerated and rest. Keep track of the pain's location, pattern, stool changes, temperature, and ability to urinate. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment; do not share leftover medicine.

Seek urgent help for intense or rapidly worsening pain, a rigid or markedly swollen abdomen, fainting, confusion, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, blood or black stool, or high fever. Arrange medical review if symptoms continue, recur after treatment, or affect eating and drinking. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with a weakened immune system should seek advice sooner.

Ask whether testing is needed, how to take the prescribed treatment, when symptoms should begin to settle, and how to avoid passing the infection to household members. Mention recent travel, untreated water exposure, ongoing diarrhoea, weight loss, or symptoms in others at home.
