When should you see a doctor about swollen glands?

Swollen glands are enlarged lymph nodes, often in the neck, underarm or groin. They commonly respond to nearby infection, such as tonsillitis or strep throat. Viral illnesses including glandular fever, measles, mumps, rubella and HIV infection can also cause swelling. The location of the node and symptoms such as sore throat, fever, rash or fatigue help a clinician consider the cause; swelling alone cannot identify it.

Notice where the swelling is, whether it is tender, and whether it changes. Rest, drink fluids and use simple pain relief only if it is suitable for you. Do not repeatedly press or squeeze the node. Arrange a routine appointment when swelling does not settle after an illness, keeps returning, or has no clear explanation.

Seek urgent help if swollen glands come with difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe weakness, confusion, a rapidly spreading rash, or marked swelling of the face or neck. Contact a clinician promptly for a hard or fixed node, night sweats, persistent fever, or unexplained swelling in more than one area.

Ask what area may be causing the lymph-node response, whether an examination or tests are needed, and how long to monitor the swelling. Mention recent infections, travel, medicines, vaccinations and any fever, rash, weight change or night sweats.
