When should you see a doctor about skin swelling?

Swelling may be local or widespread and can occur with redness, warmth, itching, tenderness, or raised welts. Hives can present with itchy raised areas, while Angioedema can present with deeper swelling, often around the lips, eyelids, hands, or throat. Cellulitis can present with a tender, warm, expanding area of red skin and may be accompanied by feeling unwell. The pattern matters more than swelling alone.

Note when the swelling began, how quickly it changed, and whether a food, medicine, insect bite, cosmetic, injury, or injection preceded it. Remove rings or tight items from a swollen hand or finger. Avoid scratching and do not squeeze a swollen area. Photograph the change and list medicines, supplements, and recent treatments for the clinician.

Get emergency help for swelling of the tongue, mouth, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, wheezing, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Seek prompt assessment for a hot, painful, expanding area, pus, fever, red streaks, severe pain, or swelling near the eye. New swelling after a medicine or procedure should be reported promptly, especially if it is progressing.

Ask whether the pattern resembles Hives, Angioedema, or Cellulitis, and what warning signs should trigger emergency care. Ask whether any medicine or exposure should be stopped, what symptom relief is suitable for you, and whether further evaluation is needed if swelling returns.
