When should you see a doctor about skin bumps?

A bump can arise from an irritated hair follicle, trapped skin material, heat, inflammation or a harmless growth. Folliculitis may cause tender bumps around hairs, while keratosis pilaris often feels rough and small on the upper arms or thighs. Dermatosis papulosa nigra causes small dark bumps, commonly on the face or neck. Appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Note when the bump appeared, where it is, whether it itches or hurts, and whether its colour, size or surface has changed. Wash gently, avoid squeezing or picking, and pause a new product that seems to irritate the area. A clinician can choose treatment based on the diagnosis; options may include antihistamine treatment, cryotherapy or skin tag removal.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a bump with spreading redness, warmth, pus, marked tenderness, fever or swelling near the eye. Seek urgent help if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, or if a rapidly changing lesion bleeds without clear injury. A persistent bump also deserves review, even when it causes little discomfort.

Ask what the bump most resembles, whether it needs testing, which changes should trigger a return visit, and whether treatment could leave a mark. Bring a list of skin products and medicines, plus a dated photograph if the bump has changed.
