When should you see a doctor about neck lump?

Neck lumps may be swollen lymph nodes, thyroid nodules, cysts, infections, or other tissue changes. A neck lump is a presentation of thyroid cancer, lymphoma, and some head and neck cancers, but a lump alone cannot identify its cause. Record where the lump is, when it appeared, whether it is changing, and whether it moves when you swallow. Make a medical appointment for a new or persistent lump, even if it is not painful. Do not repeatedly press or massage it. A clinician may examine the mouth, throat, thyroid, and lymph-node areas and may arrange an ultrasound or a needle sample.
