When should you see a doctor about muscle aches?

Muscle aches may follow unusual activity, a minor strain, poor posture, or a viral illness. Influenza, COVID-19, dengue fever, chikungunya, and brucellosis can include body aches with other symptoms. Fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, or heat cramps may also be considered depending on the pattern and context. Muscle aches alone do not identify a particular condition.

Reduce strenuous activity, use gentle movement if comfortable, rest, and drink normally. Note where the pain is, when it began, what makes it worse, and whether fever, rash, joint swelling, weakness, numbness, or recent travel is present. Ask a pharmacist about suitable pain relief if you take other medicines or have a long-term condition.

Seek urgent care for severe weakness, difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest pain, confusion, a stiff neck, rapidly spreading swelling, dark urine after intense exertion, or muscle pain with a high fever. After heat exposure, urgent assessment is needed for collapse, confusion, or inability to drink.

Ask whether the pattern suggests muscle, joint, nerve, medication, or infection-related pain; whether an examination or tests are needed; and which activity is safe while symptoms settle.
