When should you see a doctor about loss of appetite?

Short answer
See a doctor when loss of appetite persists, causes unplanned weight loss, leaves you weak or dehydrated, or occurs with other concerning symptoms; seek urgent care for confusion, severe breathing difficulty, or collapse.

What reduced appetite can mean
Appetite may fall during an infection such as gastroenteritis or influenza, with nausea, pain, stress, or changes in mood. Hepatitis A can affect appetite alongside tiredness, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin. Stomach cancer and high calcium in cancer are less common possibilities, particularly when appetite loss persists with weight loss, vomiting, swallowing difficulty, pain, or marked thirst.
What to do while monitoring it
Take small, frequent meals and choose nourishing foods you can tolerate. Sip fluids regularly and note urine output, vomiting, bowel symptoms, fever, pain, weight change, and medicines. Do not force food when nauseated. If you are receiving cancer care, discuss nutrition support early; a treatment team can adapt food and fluid advice to your symptoms and treatment.
When symptoms need prompt care
Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, severe abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening illness. Sepsis can present with a person becoming seriously unwell, confused, unusually sleepy, or breathing rapidly. Arrange a medical appointment for persistent appetite loss, ongoing vomiting, pain, swallowing trouble, yellow skin, or unplanned weight loss.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may be affecting your appetite, whether medicines or an underlying illness should be reviewed, how to protect hydration and nutrition, and which symptoms require same-day care.
