When should you see a doctor about jaundice?

Jaundice is yellowing caused by a buildup of bilirubin. It can reflect a problem involving red blood cells, the liver, gallbladder or bile ducts. Possible associated conditions include malaria, pancreatitis, fatty liver disease, G6PD deficiency and sickle cell disease; less commonly, blockage can be related to a tumour. The symptom does not identify the cause by itself.

Arrange medical assessment rather than waiting for the colour to settle. Note when the change began, whether the eyes or skin are affected, urine and stool colour, pain, fever, travel, alcohol, new medicines and supplements. Do not start or stop medicines without advice, and avoid alcohol until a clinician has assessed you.

Seek urgent help for jaundice with confusion, unusual sleepiness, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever with chills, bleeding, fainting, or rapidly worsening illness. Emergency assessment is also needed if jaundice follows a suspected medicine reaction or occurs with severe weakness or breathing difficulty.

Ask which blood tests or scans may clarify the source, whether your medicines or travel history matter, and which changes should bring you back urgently. Tell the doctor about previous liver or blood conditions and any family history of them.
