When should you see a doctor about itchy eyes?

Itchy eyes commonly accompany allergic conjunctivitis, allergic rhinitis, pet allergy or house dust mite allergy. Dry eye, irritants, contact-lens problems and infection can also cause discomfort. The pattern matters: watering and itch after exposure may suggest allergy, while pain, light sensitivity or visual change needs a different assessment.

Avoid rubbing your eyes, wash your hands, and limit exposure to smoke, dust and known allergens. A cool clean compress may soothe the surface. Remove contact lenses if they feel uncomfortable and do not share eye products. Note the setting, timing, discharge and any nose symptoms so the clinician can choose appropriate care.

Get urgent medical help for sudden vision loss or change, severe eye pain, major swelling, light sensitivity, an eye injury, or a red painful eye while wearing contact lenses. Seek emergency help if itchy eyes occur with lip or tongue swelling or breathing difficulty.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, dry eye or another cause, whether contact lenses should be paused, and which drops are suitable for you. Ask how to reduce exposure to a suspected pet or indoor allergen.
