When should you see a doctor about facial swelling?

A sudden swelling of the lips, eyelids, or face may occur with angioedema, food allergy, drug allergy, or an insect bite or sting. Warmth, redness, tenderness, and fever can occur with cellulitis or erysipelas. Facial pressure and nasal symptoms may accompany sinusitis. Swelling around the face, particularly with swelling in the legs or changes in urination, can also be associated with chronic kidney disease. The timing and associated symptoms help guide assessment.

Note when the swelling began and any new food, medicine, cosmetic, bite, dental problem, or infection. Do not scratch, squeeze, or massage the area. Remove a suspected new skin product and use a cool compress if it feels soothing. Do not stop an essential prescribed medicine without professional advice; contact a clinician promptly if a medicine may be involved.

Call emergency services for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, a hoarse voice, dizziness, fainting, or rapidly spreading swelling. Urgent assessment is also needed for swelling around the eye with vision changes, severe pain, fever, or a rapidly worsening red and tender area.

Ask what trigger or condition is most plausible, whether allergy testing or infection treatment is needed, how to avoid a repeat episode, and which early symptoms should prompt emergency action.
