When should you see a doctor about dry skin?

Short answer
See a doctor about dry skin when it persists despite regular moisturising, becomes painful or inflamed, cracks or bleeds, spreads widely, or affects sleep and daily activities.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Book a review if
- Dryness persists, cracks, bleeds, or disrupts sleep.
- Bring
- A list of products, medicines, and symptom changes.
What persistent dryness can mean
Dryness may reflect weather, frequent washing, hot water, irritants, or a weakened skin barrier. Ongoing scale, redness, fissures, or itch can also occur with asteatotic eczema, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, ichthyosis, or cracked heels. The pattern, body site, timing, and products used help a clinician separate these possibilities.
Dry skin is not automatically a sign of a serious illness. A review is useful when the change is new, unusually severe, recurrent, or accompanied by other symptoms such as marked itch, rash, swelling, or soreness.
What you can do before the visit
Use lukewarm rather than hot water, keep showers brief, and choose a fragrance-free cleanser only where needed. Apply a thick moisturiser or ointment soon after washing and reapply when the skin feels tight. Avoid picking flakes, fragranced products, and rough scrubs. Note when the dryness began, where it appears, what makes it worse, and which products or medicines touch the area.
When care is more urgent
Arrange prompt medical care for rapidly worsening redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, deep painful cracks, or bleeding that does not settle. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or a sudden widespread blistering or peeling rash. These features need assessment beyond routine moisturising.
Questions to take with you
Ask whether the pattern fits eczema, psoriasis, ichthyosis, or another cause; which ingredients or cleansers to avoid; whether you need a medicated cream; and how to use emollient therapy safely on cracked or inflamed skin.

Questions people ask
Can dry skin be treated at home?
Mild dryness often settles with gentle washing and frequent fragrance-free moisturiser, but persistent or inflamed symptoms need assessment.
Does itchy dry skin always mean eczema?
No. Eczema is one possibility; irritation, psoriasis, ichthyosis, and other causes can look similar.
