When should you see a doctor about cough?

A cough clears mucus or irritants from the airways. It can accompany a common cold or acute bronchitis, and may also be linked with allergic rhinitis, acid reflux, asthma, bronchiectasis, or chronic cough. The sound of a cough cannot identify its cause by itself. Tell the clinician whether it is dry or brings up phlegm, and whether triggers include exercise, dust, meals, or lying down.

Rest, drink fluids, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use clean humidified air if it feels soothing. Note when the cough began, its pattern, mucus colour, fever, breathing changes, and medicines. Do not use leftover antibiotics. A clinician may listen to your chest and decide whether examination, testing, or treatment is needed.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or coughing up more than a trace of blood. Arrange medical review promptly if the cough is worsening, repeatedly returns, follows a choking episode, or affects eating, drinking, sleep, or normal activity. Children, older adults, and people with lung or heart disease may need earlier advice.

Ask what causes fit the timing and triggers, whether asthma, reflux, allergy, or infection needs assessment, and which treatments are appropriate. Ask what changes should bring you back sooner and whether anyone at home needs practical infection precautions.
