When should you see a doctor about breast pain?

Pain that follows a monthly pattern may be associated with premenstrual syndrome or fibrocystic breast changes. Localised pain with a tender area can occur with a blocked milk duct, while warmth, redness, and fever may point to mastitis. Pain alone does not diagnose a serious breast condition, but a new pattern should not be dismissed.

Track where the pain is, when it occurs, how long it lasts, and whether it follows your cycle, exercise, breastfeeding, or a medicine change. Wear a well-fitting supportive bra and use a simple pain-relief option only if it is suitable for you. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, injury, and any lump or discharge.

Arrange prompt care for a hot, swollen, red breast, fever, worsening pain while breastfeeding, a new lump, bloody discharge, or skin changes. Emergency help is appropriate for chest pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Persistent pain needs review even without other findings.

Ask whether the pain pattern suggests a breast cause or pain from the chest wall, and whether you need an examination or imaging. Ask how to manage symptoms safely and what would make the pain urgent.
