When should you see a doctor about blocked nose?

Nasal blockage happens when the lining inside the nose swells or mucus narrows the airflow. A common cold, allergic rhinitis, house dust mite allergy, or sinusitis may cause it. Long-lasting congestion can also affect smell, sleep, and mouth breathing. Symptoms on one side, recurrent nosebleeds, or facial pressure need a clinician's review.

Drink fluids, rest, and consider saline rinsing with safe water and clean equipment. Reduce exposure to smoke, dust, and known allergens. A pharmacist or doctor can advise whether allergy medication is suitable. Do not use decongestant nasal sprays longer than the product instructions, because overuse can worsen blockage.

Get urgent help if congestion comes with difficulty breathing, swelling around an eye, severe headache, confusion, a stiff neck, or rapidly worsening facial pain and fever. Arrange an appointment for persistent blockage, repeated sinus symptoms, reduced smell that does not recover, or snoring with pauses in breathing.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, infection, or another nasal problem; whether you need an examination; and which spray or medicine is appropriate for your symptoms and other health conditions.
