When Is a Urine Test Recommended for Kidney Infection?

A kidney infection can cause fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, vomiting, painful urination, urgency, or cloudy urine. Urinalysis looks for signs of inflammation and infection, while a urine culture can identify bacteria and help the clinician choose an appropriate antibiotic. The sample is often collected before antibiotics when this can be done without delaying care.

A urine result is interpreted with your symptoms and examination. Blood tests or imaging may be needed if the illness is severe, symptoms do not improve, blockage is possible, or infections keep returning. A negative result does not make severe symptoms safe to ignore.

Contact a clinician promptly if kidney infection symptoms are present. Give the sample exactly as instructed and tell the team about recent antibiotics, allergies, pregnancy, kidney problems, and medicines. If treatment is prescribed, take it for the full instructed course and ask what to do if vomiting prevents you from keeping tablets down.

Drink fluids if you can do so comfortably, rest, and monitor fever and pain. Do not delay evaluation by trying to treat a suspected kidney infection with home remedies alone.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, persistent vomiting, worsening side or back pain, breathing difficulty, or fever with shaking chills. Pregnancy, childhood, older age, a blocked urinary tract, or significant kidney disease lowers the threshold for same-day medical assessment.
