When is tumour removal surgery recommended for throat cancer?

A head and neck team considers the tumour's exact site, size, depth and spread, along with nearby lymph nodes and your general health. The operation may be performed through the mouth or through an external incision, depending on access and the structures involved. Some people need reconstruction, a temporary feeding tube or support for breathing during recovery. Radiotherapy, chemotherapy or other medicines may be used instead of surgery or combined with it. The plan is tailored to cancer control and daily function.

Attend the recommended examination and imaging appointments, and tell the team about swallowing difficulty, voice change, weight loss, breathing symptoms, dental problems and medicines. Ask how treatment could affect eating, speaking, taste and neck movement. A speech and swallowing assessment before treatment can establish support needs and help plan rehabilitation.
