When is traction therapy recommended for cervical spondylosis?

Short answer
Traction therapy may be recommended for selected cervical spondylosis symptoms when a clinician believes gentle unloading could reduce neck or arm discomfort.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Who decides
- A clinician after a neck and nerve assessment
- Usually combined with
- Movement, strengthening and activity advice
What the treatment involves
Cervical traction applies a controlled pulling force to the neck, either by hand, with equipment in a clinic, or through a carefully taught home approach. The aim is to reduce pressure and allow easier movement; it does not reverse age-related changes. Cervical spondylosis can involve discs, joints and nearby nerves, so the examination matters.
A physiotherapist checks neck movement, strength, sensation, reflexes and symptom behaviour before choosing a technique. Traction may be one part of a plan that also includes posture changes, mobility work, strengthening and advice about activity. It should not be started independently when the cause of symptoms is uncertain.
Using traction safely
Tell the clinician about previous neck injury, osteoporosis, inflammatory disease, surgery, dizziness, headaches or neurological symptoms. During treatment, report increasing arm pain, numbness, weakness, nausea or light-headedness. Follow the prescribed position, force and session length rather than improvising with household devices. The treatment overview explains common traction approaches.
When neck symptoms need review
Book an assessment for persistent neck pain, reduced movement or pain travelling into an arm. Seek urgent care for new or worsening weakness, trouble walking, loss of hand coordination, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe neck pain after trauma.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms suggest nerve irritation, what traction is intended to change, how progress will be measured, and which exercises should accompany it.

Questions people ask
Can traction cure cervical spondylosis?
No. It may ease selected symptoms, but it does not remove the underlying wear in the neck.
Should I buy a home traction device first?
Discuss this with a clinician first, because the wrong technique or force can aggravate symptoms.
