When are topical corticosteroids recommended for asteatotic eczema?

Asteatotic eczema, also called winter itch or eczema craquele, can make the skin look dry and cracked, often on the lower legs. A corticosteroid reduces inflammation rather than replacing the skin's lost oils. A clinician may choose the preparation and strength according to the body area, the appearance of the flare, and the person's age. Mild irritation from dryness may improve with regular emollient use alone, while persistent redness, itch, or fissuring can justify a prescribed course.

Use the prescribed product only on the areas and for the schedule advised. Apply an emollient frequently, especially after bathing, and keep showers brief and comfortably warm. Avoid fragranced washes and vigorous rubbing. Do not cover treated skin with a tight dressing unless a clinician specifically directs this. If the skin improves, follow the agreed stopping or step-down plan rather than extending treatment independently.

Arrange a review if cracks become increasingly painful, ooze, develop yellow crusting, or fail to settle with the advised plan. Seek prompt medical attention for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, fever, or feeling unwell. A clinician should reassess recurrent flares, because infection, contact irritation, or another skin condition can resemble asteatotic eczema.

Ask which strength and formulation suit the affected area, how long to use it, and which moisturiser routine should continue between flares. Clarify whether any cracked or weeping areas need separate assessment.
