When is targeted therapy recommended for non-Hodgkin lymphoma?

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma includes many different diseases. The pathology report helps identify the lymphoma type and the markers on its cells. Your team also considers whether the lymphoma is slow-growing or fast-growing, where it is found, whether it is causing symptoms, your general health and any previous treatment. A targeted medicine attaches to or blocks a feature of lymphoma cells, helping the immune system recognise them or interrupting a signal they use to grow. It may be combined with other medicines, used after earlier treatment or chosen when the disease has returned.

Ask which lymphoma subtype and cell marker are relevant to the recommendation. Check whether the pathology needs review or additional testing. Tell the team about infections, vaccinations, allergies, heart or lung conditions and every medicine or supplement you use. Discuss the treatment schedule, monitoring blood tests, infusion or tablet instructions and what to do if you feel unwell. Report side effects early rather than changing treatment yourself.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, confusion, sudden weakness, uncontrolled bleeding or a rapidly worsening allergic reaction. Contact your treatment team promptly for fever or chills, new infection symptoms, severe diarrhoea, unusual bruising, marked swelling or symptoms that worsen quickly.
