When is STI screening recommended for genital herpes?

A clinician can often assess a sore or blister by examining it and taking a swab from the affected area. Testing is most useful while a lesion is present. A blood test may sometimes be discussed, but it does not always show when or where infection was acquired and may not answer every concern.

Genital herpes can be passed through skin-to-skin sexual contact, including when visible sores are absent. A diagnosis does not identify who transmitted it. Other STI tests may be offered because one exposure can involve more than one infection.

Arrange a prompt confidential appointment if a new sore, blister, ulcer, burning sensation, or unusual genital pain develops. Avoid sexual contact while lesions or warning symptoms are present, and tell the clinician about the timing of exposure and any pregnancy. Do not apply irritating products or share prescribed treatment.

Seek urgent advice for severe pain, difficulty passing urine, fever, widespread rash, eye symptoms, severe headache, or feeling very unwell. Anyone who is pregnant and notices possible genital herpes should contact maternity or medical services promptly because timing affects care around birth.
