When is STI screening recommended for chlamydia?

Short answer

Chlamydia screening is recommended when you have symptoms, a recent sexual exposure, a new or multiple partner, or a clinician identifies a reason to test.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why screening matters

Chlamydia often causes no noticeable symptoms, so feeling well does not exclude infection. When symptoms occur, they can include burning when urinating, unusual discharge, bleeding after sex, pelvic pain, or testicular pain. Testing may involve a urine sample or a swab from the exposed site; the best sample depends on the sexual contact reported.

A positive result can be treated with prescribed antibiotics. Recent partners may need assessment and treatment, and sexual contact should wait until the clinician confirms it is safe. Untreated infection can lead to complications affecting reproductive organs.

What to do next

Arrange a confidential appointment if you have symptoms, a partner has been diagnosed, a condom broke, or you are concerned after sex with a new partner. Tell the clinician about oral, vaginal, or anal exposure so the correct sites are tested. Avoid sharing leftover antibiotics, and follow the full treatment instructions if infection is found.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical care for significant pelvic or lower-abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, pain or swelling in a testicle, or feeling acutely unwell. These symptoms can indicate an ascending or spreading infection and may need examination rather than a routine screening appointment. Urgent care is also appropriate after sexual assault or if you feel unsafe.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which body sites need testing, whether other STI tests are appropriate, when to test after the exposure, how partners should be contacted, and when it is safe to resume sexual activity.

Questions people ask

Can chlamydia be present without symptoms?

Yes. Many people have no noticeable symptoms, which is why testing may be useful after a relevant exposure or partner diagnosis.

Should a partner be tested?

A recent partner should seek confidential clinical advice because assessment and treatment may be needed even without symptoms.
