When is spinal fusion recommended for spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis narrows the space available for nerves. Decompression surgery can enlarge that space, while fusion stabilises two or more vertebrae. Fusion is not automatically needed for every narrowed spinal canal. The surgeon weighs leg pain, walking limits, weakness, back pain, movement on imaging, spinal alignment, and whether decompression alone would leave the segment unstable. The level and cause of narrowing matter when choosing treatment.

Bring a clear description of how far you can walk, whether sitting or leaning forward helps, and any changes in strength or sensation. Review imaging with a spine specialist and ask whether the plan is decompression alone or decompression with fusion. Discuss physiotherapy, medicines, injections when appropriate, and activity changes. Ask about recovery, restrictions, rehabilitation, and signs that would require earlier review.
