When is shoulder reduction recommended for shoulder dislocation?

A dislocation occurs when the upper arm bone leaves the shoulder socket. A clinician checks the arm’s circulation, sensation, and movement, and may arrange imaging to look for a fracture. Reduction then uses controlled manoeuvres to return the joint to position, with pain relief or sedation when appropriate. The arm is usually supported afterwards while the team assesses the joint and plans rehabilitation.

Treat a suspected dislocation as urgent. Keep the arm still in the position that hurts least, support it with a sling or folded cloth, and use a wrapped cold pack. Do not force the shoulder back, massage it, or eat and drink in case sedation or a procedure is needed. Arrange medical assessment without delay.

Call emergency services for a visibly deformed shoulder, severe pain after an injury, a cold or pale hand, absent or weak pulse, increasing numbness, or inability to move the fingers. These signs can indicate injury to nerves or blood vessels and need immediate assessment.

Ask whether imaging shows a fracture, what pain relief will be used, how long the arm needs support, and when exercises can begin.
