When is salpingectomy recommended for hydrosalpinx?

Hydrosalpinx is a fallopian tube blocked and expanded by fluid, often after infection, inflammation or previous pelvic surgery. Some people have pelvic discomfort, while others have no symptoms and discover it during fertility assessment. Removing the affected tube can prevent fluid from collecting there and may be considered when the tube is severely damaged, painful or unlikely to function. A clinician will also consider whether the other tube is open and whether pregnancy is being pursued naturally or through assisted fertility treatment.

Discuss ultrasound or other imaging findings, symptoms, fertility plans and previous pelvic infections with a gynaecologist. Ask whether salpingectomy, drainage or another approach fits your goals. The team may assess the opposite tube and review ovarian reserve or other fertility factors when relevant. If surgery is planned, ask about the route of surgery, anaesthesia, recovery, and how treatment timing relates to fertility care. Do not start or stop medicines without guidance.

Arrange medical review for persistent pelvic pain, unusual vaginal discharge, fever, pain during sex or difficulty becoming pregnant. Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, vomiting with severe pain or a high fever. These symptoms may reflect infection or another pelvic emergency and need prompt assessment rather than waiting for a planned appointment.
