When is radiotherapy recommended for mouth cancer?

The plan depends on the tumour’s location in the mouth, size, depth, lymph nodes, surgical findings and your ability to eat, speak and heal. Radiation can be the main local treatment in selected situations, or it may follow surgery when features suggest that additional treatment would help control the area. For more advanced disease, it may be combined with medicine. It can also be directed at a painful or bleeding site when the goal is symptom relief rather than treatment of every cancer cell in the body.

During treatment, follow mouth-care instructions, choose foods that are easier to swallow, and ask early for pain relief, dietetic help or speech and swallowing support.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, inability to swallow liquids, uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly increasing face or neck swelling, or confusion. Contact the treatment team promptly for fever, dehydration, worsening mouth pain, a new inability to eat, or signs of infection around a tooth or wound.
