When is radiotherapy recommended for Hodgkin lymphoma?

Hodgkin lymphoma is often treated with medicine that can reach disease throughout the body. Radiotherapy treats a defined area, so it may be considered when lymphoma began in a bulky or clearly localised region, when a scan shows an area that still needs local treatment, or when the team is addressing a particular site. The decision uses the original disease distribution, response to medicine, scan findings, previous treatment, age, other health conditions, and the location of organs near the target. Modern planning aims to limit exposure to the heart, lungs, thyroid, breasts, and other nearby tissues when they are close to the treatment field. Not everyone with Hodgkin lymphoma needs radiation.

Ask how the scan results affect the recommendation and whether radiotherapy is being used to consolidate a response, treat remaining disease, or relieve a specific problem. Share any prior radiation, heart or lung condition, thyroid disease, pregnancy possibility, and medicines. The team may discuss breathing or positioning instructions when the chest is treated. Keep follow-up appointments so new symptoms and treatment effects can be reviewed. Ask for advice about skin care, fatigue, exercise, and when normal activities can resume.

Tell the treating team promptly about fever, chills, worsening breathlessness, chest pain, new trouble swallowing, severe weakness, or an inability to keep fluids down.
