Short answer

Post-operative rehabilitation is recommended after hip fracture surgery, often starting in the hospital when the surgical team says movement and weight bearing are safe.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Starting point
Many people begin supervised movement in hospital.
Main goals
Safe transfers, walking, balance and independence.

What the programme addresses

A hip fracture and its operation can affect leg strength, balance, walking confidence and everyday tasks. Early sessions may include getting out of bed, transferring to a chair, walking with an aid and simple exercises for circulation and muscle activation. Later therapy works on stairs, balance, endurance and practical activities. The plan reflects the fracture repair, weight-bearing instructions, pain, general health and home environment.

What you can do

Use the walking aid and weight-bearing level prescribed by the team, even when you feel stronger. Practise the home exercises in short, regular sessions and keep pathways clear to reduce falls. Take pain relief as directed so movement is manageable, and tell the therapist about dizziness or fear of falling. Arrange the equipment and support needed before discharge.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, a new inability to bear the permitted weight, or a leg that appears newly shortened or rotated. Urgent help is needed for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or a swollen painful calf.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how much weight you may place through the operated leg, which movements to avoid, when stairs are safe, and what assistance is needed at home.

Questions people ask

Does rehabilitation stop after leaving hospital?

Usually not. Follow-up physiotherapy may continue at home or in a clinic as walking, strength and balance improve.

Can pain delay exercises?

Pain should be discussed because medication timing, exercise intensity and walking support can often be adjusted safely.
