When is operative hysteroscopy recommended for recurrent miscarriage?

A thin camera is passed through the cervix so a gynaecologist can inspect the uterine cavity and treat selected findings. These may include scar tissue, a polyp, a cavity-distorting fibroid or an unusual partition. Recurrent miscarriage has several possible causes, so hysteroscopy is not automatically needed after every loss and does not explain every case.

Your clinician may review pregnancy history, pelvic imaging and other tests before suggesting surgery. Ask whether the finding is inside the cavity, whether observation or another treatment is reasonable, and how the procedure fits with plans for trying to conceive. You may need instructions about timing, medicines and follow-up before attempting pregnancy.

After hysteroscopy, seek urgent medical advice for heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic pain, fever, faintness or unpleasant-smelling discharge. During an evaluation for miscarriage, prompt care is also needed for heavy bleeding, severe pain, shoulder pain or feeling faint.
