When is operative hysteroscopy recommended for Asherman syndrome?

Short answer

Operative hysteroscopy may be recommended when Asherman syndrome has created scar tissue inside the uterus that needs to be examined and treated.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why it may be used

Asherman syndrome, also called intrauterine adhesions, occurs when bands of scar tissue join areas inside the uterus. It may be associated with lighter or absent periods, pelvic pain, difficulty becoming pregnant, or pregnancy losses. During operative hysteroscopy, a thin camera passes through the vagina and cervix so a surgeon can see the uterine cavity and carefully divide adhesions with specialised instruments. The approach avoids an abdominal incision, but risks and recovery vary.

Preparing for treatment

Your specialist may use ultrasound, a contrast study, or diagnostic hysteroscopy to understand the cavity before treatment. Discuss fertility goals, menstrual changes, previous uterine procedures, medicines, and pregnancy plans. Ask whether the cavity will need a follow-up check and how recurrence of adhesions will be monitored. When to seek care

Arrange assessment for new absent or markedly reduced periods, ongoing pelvic pain, infertility concerns, or repeated pregnancy loss after a uterine procedure. After hysteroscopy, seek urgent advice for heavy bleeding, fever, worsening abdominal pain, fainting, or unusual discharge. Contact the surgical team if recovery symptoms are not settling as expected.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how extensive the adhesions appear to be, what the procedure aims to restore, what anaesthesia and recovery involve, and whether another test will check the uterine cavity afterward. Ask when it is safe to try for pregnancy and which symptoms should trigger review.
