Short answer

Narrowband UVB phototherapy may be recommended for early mycosis fungoides limited to the skin, especially when patches are widespread or difficult to treat with creams alone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical setting
Specialist care for skin-limited disease
Main aim
Reduce patches over treated skin
Follow-up
Continue scheduled lymphoma and skin checks

What this means

Mycosis fungoides is a type of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma that can appear as persistent, scaly or discoloured patches. Narrowband UVB can treat larger areas of affected skin and may help reduce visible patches when disease remains skin-limited. It does not replace staging or cancer follow-up. A specialist may need examination, skin sampling and review of lymph nodes or other symptoms before deciding whether light treatment fits your situation. Thicker plaques, nodules or disease outside the skin may require a different plan.

How treatment is planned

Your dermatology team will record the extent and appearance of the patches, review medicines that cause light sensitivity, and set a starting dose suited to your skin. Attend sessions as scheduled and avoid tanning or extra sun exposure unless the team gives different instructions. Wear the protective equipment provided, including eye protection when advised. Tell the team about new redness, burning, blistering or any new lump. Keep oncology or dermatology follow-up even when the patches improve, because monitoring remains part of care.

When to seek care promptly

Seek prompt specialist review for a new rapidly growing lump, an open sore, bleeding, persistent pain, swollen lymph nodes, fever or unexplained worsening. Get urgent help for widespread blistering or a severe light reaction. These changes should be assessed as possible disease progression, infection or treatment reaction rather than managed by increasing exposure.

Questions to take with you

Ask what stage and skin pattern you have, what the light treatment is intended to improve, how response will be measured, and which symptoms should trigger an earlier visit. Ask whether all medicines and skincare products you use are compatible with phototherapy.

Questions people ask

Does UVB cure mycosis fungoides?

It can improve selected skin patches, but it is not described as a cure and follow-up remains necessary.

Why might creams be used with light treatment?

Creams can target particular areas while phototherapy covers broader skin; the specialist chooses the combination based on your disease.
