When is an MRI scan recommended for Li-Fraumeni syndrome?

Li-Fraumeni syndrome is an inherited condition associated with a higher chance of developing several cancer types. MRI does not use ionising radiation, so specialists may include it in surveillance plans designed around age, personal history, family history and previous findings. The body area and timing depend on the programme arranged by the genetics and oncology teams.

Keep a written record of planned appointments and tell the team about new symptoms, operations, implants, kidney problems, pregnancy or difficulty with enclosed spaces. Ask whether contrast is needed and how the scan fits with other examinations. Children and adults may need different arrangements, including support with staying still.

Contact urgent medical services for a new seizure, sudden weakness, severe breathing difficulty, unexplained heavy bleeding, sudden confusion or a rapidly worsening severe headache. Do not wait for routine surveillance if a new or concerning symptom appears.
