When is mole removal recommended for moles?

Many moles are harmless and do not need treatment. A clinician may recommend removal if the mole has changed in size, shape, colour, or surface, or if it bleeds, crusts, itches, or catches on clothing. Removal can allow the tissue to be examined in a laboratory when the appearance needs clarification. A mole can also be removed because friction causes repeated discomfort, or because its appearance bothers you. The method depends on the mole’s depth, position, appearance, and the reason for removing it.

Arrange a skin assessment before choosing removal, particularly for a new or changing mole. Do not cut, tie off, burn, or apply unapproved products to it at home. Take a clear photograph for comparison and mention any bleeding, tenderness, or family history of skin cancer. If removal is chosen, ask whether the sample will be sent for examination, how the wound will be cared for, and whether a scar is expected.

Book a prompt dermatology assessment if a mole changes noticeably, develops several colours, has an irregular outline, repeatedly bleeds, forms a persistent crust, or becomes persistently itchy or painful. Seek urgent help for bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure, or for rapidly spreading redness, swelling, or pus after a procedure.

Ask what feature makes removal advisable, whether observation is reasonable, which technique fits the site, how the tissue will be assessed, and what wound changes should trigger a review.
