When is medicated shampoo treatment recommended for scalp ringworm?

Scalp ringworm, also called tinea capitis, is a fungal infection of the scalp and hair. It can cause scaling, itch, broken hairs, tender areas, or patches of hair loss. Because the infection reaches the hair shaft and follicles, shampoo alone is generally not the complete treatment plan. A clinician may add medicated shampoo to cleanse the scalp and reduce fungal material that could spread to other people or household items while the main treatment takes effect.

Use the shampoo on the schedule given and allow the recommended contact time before rinsing. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, towels, or pillowcases. Wash or clean hair tools, and ask about checking close household contacts or pets if the clinician suspects a shared source. Avoid scratching or shaving irritated areas without advice. Complete the prescribed plan even if the scale improves early, and attend review so scalp inflammation and hair regrowth can be assessed.

Arrange prompt medical care for painful boggy swelling, pus, fever, rapidly expanding redness, or tender neck glands. New or enlarging hair-loss patches need assessment because untreated inflammation can damage follicles. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a severe product reaction. Children with suspected scalp ringworm should be assessed promptly, particularly when hair loss or significant tenderness is present.
