Understanding the condition
Paget disease affects the nipple and areola and can occur with an underlying tumour elsewhere in the breast. A biopsy, mammogram, ultrasound or MRI may help map the disease. Some people may be offered removal of the nipple and nearby tissue with breast-conserving surgery; others need mastectomy because the extent or location makes that approach unsuitable.

Ask how far the disease extends and whether an underlying tumour is present. Discuss the operation, lymph node assessment, reconstruction, scar care and whether radiotherapy or medicines are likely afterward. Take time to compare the surgical options with the breast team, including how each choice affects future monitoring.
When to seek care
Seek assessment for persistent nipple itching, scaling, crusting, discharge, bleeding, flattening or a lump, especially when a skin treatment has not helped. During treatment, report fever, spreading redness, wound drainage or sudden swelling without delay.
