How the decision is made
The surgeon considers the tumour's position and size, involvement of the nipple or skin, imaging, biopsy findings and lymph node assessment. Mastectomy removes the breast tissue; sentinel lymph node surgery or another node procedure may be offered at the same operation. Hormone receptors and other tumour features guide medicines after surgery.
Planning treatment
Review the operation with a breast surgeon and ask whether any breast-conserving option is technically reasonable. Discuss nipple and skin removal, scar position, reconstruction or contour procedures, arm exercises, pathology results and whether radiotherapy or drug treatment will follow. A family history review may also be useful.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt clinical review for a new or persistent lump, nipple inversion, discharge, skin ulceration, bleeding or swelling in the armpit. After a biopsy or operation, seek advice for fever, increasing redness, fluid leakage or rapidly worsening pain.
