When is joint aspiration recommended for a ganglion cyst?

A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled lump near a joint or tendon, commonly around the wrist or hand. The clinician cleans the skin, numbs the area, and guides a needle into the cyst to remove its jelly-like contents. A sample may be considered if the diagnosis is uncertain. Aspiration can make the lump smaller, but the connection to the joint or tendon sheath may remain, allowing it to return.

Have the lump examined before choosing a procedure, especially if it is new, firm, rapidly changing, or not clearly a ganglion cyst. Mention numbness, weakness, previous wrist injury, and medicines that affect bleeding. Afterward, keep the site protected as instructed and avoid pressing or striking the area while it settles. A review can assess symptoms and movement.

Arrange medical review for a lump that grows quickly, becomes hot or red, or is associated with fever, drainage, worsening pain, numbness, or loss of strength. Sudden severe hand or finger colour change, major swelling, or inability to move the limb warrants urgent assessment.

Ask whether the lump has typical ganglion features, whether imaging is needed, whether aspiration fits its position, and what symptoms would justify another treatment if it returns.
